Likud
The Israeli national liberal party of Begin and Netanyahu, formed in 1973, the historic engine of the right.
Overview
Likud was formed in 1973 as a union of the Herut of Menachem Begin, liberals, and state list Revisionist successors. Begin 1977 victory ended three decades of Labor alignment rule, delivering the Egypt peace treaty, and his heir Shamir the unity years. Netanyahu, leader from 1993 apart from 1999-2005 interludes, governed longer than any Israeli premier across six governments. The party fuses market liberalism, security nationalism, settlement policy, and Revisionist Jabotinsky heritage. It anchors the right bloc through coalitions with religious and far right partners, the pole of Israeli politics since the late 1970s.
