Kuomintang
The Chinese nationalist party of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek, founded in 1912, now a major party in Taiwan.
Overview
The KMT, formed by Sun Yat-sen from the revolutionary alliance after the 1911 revolution, was reorganized on Leninist lines in 1924, fought warlords and communists alike, and under Chiang Kai-shek lost the civil war in 1949, retreating to Taiwan. There it governed four decades under martial law until 1987 democratization, when native Taiwanese politics gradually displaced the mainlander old guard. The KMT won presidencies in 2008 and 2012 under Ma Ying-jeou with China rapprochement, then declined as youth politics turned against Beijing. It remains the major opposition, the richest party in Taiwan, and the last ruling party of China on both sides of the strait story.
