Democratic Progressive Party (Taiwan)
The Taiwanese party of the democracy movement, founded in 1986, of presidents Chen, Tsai, and Lai.
Overview
The DPP formed illegally in 1986 as the umbrella of the tangwai democracy movement, legalized with the end of martial law in 1987. Chen Shui-bian won the presidency in 2000, ending half a century of KMT rule. Tsai Ing-wen won 2016 and 2020 with a landslide assembly majority, legalizing same sex marriage, the first in Asia, and steering Taiwan through pandemic prestige and cross strait tension. William Lai succeeded in 2024. The party represents Taiwanese identity, sovereignty cautious rhetoric, social reform, and links to the Presbyterian church and civic movements, the governing pole of the identity cleavage that structures Taiwan politics.
