Bharatiya Janata Party
The Indian Hindu nationalist party, founded in 1980, the largest party in the world by membership and governing since 2014.
Overview
The BJP formed in 1980 from the Janata Party breakup, building on the RSS movement founded 1925 whose cadres staffed it. From two seats in 1984 it rose through the Ayodhya temple campaign, governing 1998-2004 under Vajpayee, and under Narendra Modi since 2014 with successive majority governments: Hindutva cultural politics, economic centralization, welfare digitization, and assertive foreign policy. The party claims the largest membership of any party in the world, hundreds of millions of registered members, and dominates the Hindi belt and much of the south and east, reshaping Indian politics around majority identity politics and welfare delivery.
