Australian Greens
The Australian green party, founded in 1992, with growing Senate and inner city representation.
Overview
The Australian Greens united state green formations in 1992, with roots in the 1982 Franklin Dam blockade and Bob Brown Tasmanian campaigns. Brown and Christine Milne held Senate balance of power 2010-2013 with Gillard minority government, delivering carbon pricing later repealed. Adam Bandt held Melbourne for the party, leading it federally from 2020 as Greens won multiple lower house seats and Senate blocs, negotiating on climate, housing, and dental into Labor legislative bargains. The party polls strongest in inner cities and among young voters, the largest green representation relative to system size among Westminster democracies.
