Workers Party (Brazil)
The Brazilian left party, founded in 1980 by Lula and unionists, which has won the presidency five times.
Overview
The PT emerged from the Sao Paulo metalworker strikes of the late 1970s, founded in 1980 by Lula, unionists, intellectuals, and liberation theology Catholics against the dictatorship. Winning the presidency in 2002 after three defeats, Lula governed to 2010 with poverty-reducing Bolsa Familia expansion; Dilma Rousseff won twice before the 2016 impeachment. Lava Jato convictions and annulments bracketed Lula 2018 imprisonment and 2022 return, defeating Bolsonaro. The party built Latin America most institutionalized left machine: deep local government, movements, and internal currents, governing Brazil in six of nine presidential terms since 2002.
