Sumar (Spain)
The Spanish left coalition assembled by Yolanda Diaz for the 2023 elections.
Overview
Sumar, the electoral platform of labor minister Yolanda Diaz, united Podemos, United Left, Greens, and regional left forces for the July 2023 election, polling twelve percent and joining the PSOE coalition government. Diaz, a labor lawyer and Galician communist family scion, positioned the platform as post populist, joyful and rights based, distinct from Podemos style. The coalition preserved ministries of labor, culture, and equality in the second Sanchez government. Sumar faces the chronic fragility of federation parties, holding constituent organizations with separate histories and machines, while anchoring the parliamentary left outside the Socialists.
