Spanish Socialist Workers Party
The historic Spanish social democratic party, founded in 1879, of Gonzalez, Zapatero, and Sanchez.
Overview
The PSOE was founded in 1879 by Pablo Iglesias, mine unionists and Marxists, surviving illegality under Primo de Rivera and Franco to return in 1977. Felipe Gonzalez led it to 1982 landslide and fourteen years of modernization: NATO membership referendum, European integration, abortion liberalization, and industrial restructuring. Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero governed 2004-2011 with social reforms and crisis management; Pedro Sanchez, premier since 2018 through coalitions with Sumar and regional partners, leads minority governance. The party dominates Andalusia historically and Castile, holds the deep state of Spanish social democracy: unions, municipalities, and the Socialist International heritage of the oldest governing social democratic party in Europe.
