Socialist Revolutionary Party
The Russian agrarian socialist party, founded in 1901, which won the 1917 Constituent Assembly plurality before its suppression.
Overview
The Socialist Revolutionaries united the narodnik heritage of peasant socialism, terrorism against Tsarist officials, and land socialization as program. Victor Chernov led them as the largest party of 1917, winning a clear plurality of the Constituent Assembly votes that November. The Bolsheviks dispersed the Assembly after one day in January 1918. The party split between Left SRs who briefly joined the Soviets and Right SRs who fought the regime in civil war and emigration. The SRs gave Russia its deepest democratic socialist tradition, and their fate the clearest measure of Bolshevik consolidation.
