Socialist Party of Chile
The Chilean socialist party, founded in 1933, of Allende, Bachelet, and Boric governance.
Overview
The PSCh was founded in 1933 from Marxist and middle class currents, electing Salvador Allende, who became the world first democratically elected Marxist president in 1970, dying in the 1973 coup. The party split over supporting the dictatorship referendum, reunited in exile and returned to lead the Concertacion from 1990 with Ricardo Lagos and two Michelle Bachelet presidencies embodying its reformist era. It anchors the left of the post dictatorship settlements, entering Gabriel Boric 2021 coalition government. Its history contains the century arguments of democratic socialism: revolution versus reform, autonomy versus bloc.
