Podemos
The Spanish left populist party founded in 2014 from the 15-M indignados movement.
Overview
Podemos burst from the 2011 15-M square protests, founded by political scientists around Pablo Iglesias with Laclauian theory of populist discourse: la casta against the people. It won five million votes and Euro parliament seats in its first year, entering coalition government with the PSOE in 2020 as United We Can, with Iglesias, Irene Montero, and Ione Belarra holding ministries. The party merged into the Sumar coalition for 2023 after poll decline. Its legacy includes the minimum living income, housing regulation, and the feminist and rights agenda of the coalition years, proof that movement parties can reach office within a decade of founding.
