People's Party (Spain)
The principal Spanish center right party, founded in 1989 from the Popular Alliance of Manuel Fraga.
Overview
The PP refounded the Alianza Popular in 1989 as a broad center right party and under Jose Maria Aznar won 1996, delivering economic liberalization, counter terrorism success against ETA, and NATO integration before 2004 defeat amid the Madrid attacks. Mariano Rajoy governed austerity through crisis years 2011-2018. Pablo Casado and Alberto Nunez Feijoo led the party to plurality in 2023 without a path to power. The party governs most Spanish regions and cities from Madrid to Valencia, anchoring Christian democratic and liberal conservative traditions within the European People Party family.
