New Democracy (Greece)
The principal Greek center right party, founded in 1974 by Konstantinos Karamanlis.
Overview
New Democracy was founded by Karamanlis in 1974 to lead the restored democracy after the colonels collapse, uniting conservatives and liberals in the pro European center right. It governed 1974-1981, 1990-1993, 2004-2009 under Costas Karamanlis the nephew, and from 2019 under Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Kyriakos Mitsotakis modernized the party agenda: investment, digital state, tax cuts, while weathering surveillance and train crash scandals. The party dominated the post junta constitutional settlement, brought Greece into the EEC in 1981, and alternates with PASOK and later SYRIZA as the poles of the Third Republic.
