National Party (Uruguay)
The historic Uruguayan Blanco party, dating from 1836, the traditional rival of the Colorados.
Overview
The Blancos descend from the 1836 risings of Manuel Oribe against Colorado president Rivera, defining nineteenth century civil wars. The rural conservative party entered the twentieth century as the Colorado rival, winning government in 1958 after decades, collapsing with the 1973 dictatorship era, and returning to the presidency with Luis Alberto Lacalle 1990-95 and Luis Lacalle Pou 2020-25, the market liberal governing era. Wilson Ferreira Aldunate defined its democratic resistance identity. The party fuses rural federalist tradition, social conservatism, and liberal economics, half of the oldest two party system in Latin America within the most reliable democracy of the region.
