National Action Party (Mexico)
The Mexican center right party, founded in 1939, which broke PRI rule with Vicente Fox in 2000.
Overview
PAN was founded in 1939 by Catholic business and professional circles opposed to revolutionary anticlericalism, contesting elections as the loyal opposition for sixty years. It won municipal and state beachheads from 1980s as liberalization widened, and in 2000 Vicente Fox ended seven decades of PRI presidential rule. Felipe Calderon, PAN 2006-2012, launched the drug war that defined a decade of violence. The party anchors business, northern, and religious Mexico, holding governorships and the capital under Xochitl Galvez era candidacies, in opposition to MORENA dominance.
