MORENA
The Mexican party founded by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in 2014, governing Mexico since 2018.
Overview
MORENA, the National Regeneration Movement, was registered by Lopez Obrador after his 2012 defeat, converting his personal movement into a party that won the presidency in 2018 with a coalition sweeping both chambers. AMLO governed with referenda, welfare programs for youth and elders, austerity, and high approval, succeeded in 2024 by Claudia Sheinbaum, his ally and the first woman president, with MORENA supermajorities. The party is a broad left nationalist coalition: social programs, energy nationalism, anti corruption rhetoric, and a new dominant-party configuration in Mexican politics, displacing the old PRI-PAN duopoly.
