Moderate Party (Sweden)
The Swedish center right party, founded in 1904, of Carl Bildt and Fredrik Reinfeldt.
Overview
The Moderates began as the conservative electoral league of 1904, becoming the Moderate Party in 1969 and shifting to market liberalism under Carl Bildt, premier 1991-1994 with school choice, tax reform, and EU accession negotiation. Fredrik Reinfeldt led the Alliance for Sweden to power 2006-2014, privatizing and tax cutting while rebranding as the workers party. Ulf Kristersson returned it to power in 2022 dependent on Sweden Democrats support, ending the cordon sanitaire. The party carries the business and professional classes, combining Atlanticist foreign policy, now NATO membership, and welfare state reform rather than abolition.
