Overview
The Liberals formed around Confederation 1867 with the reform tradition of Baldwin and Lafontaine, governing under Laurier, the long King era, Saint Laurent, Pearson universal health care negotiation, and Pierre Trudeau charter era. Chretien three majorities 1993-2003, the Martin interlude, a decade in wilderness under Ignatieff, and Justin Trudeau 2015-2024 with carbon pricing, cannabis legalization, and pandemic governance, before Mark Carney succeeded him in 2025. The party is the pragmatic center pole of Canadian politics, balancing Quebec and the West, the party of the charter and multiculturalism, alternating with Conservatives as the natural governing party.
