Liberal Democratic Party (Japan)
The Japanese conservative party, founded in 1955, which has governed almost continuously since.
Overview
The LDP formed in 1955 from the merger of conservative rivals, establishing the 1955 System: permanent conservative rule facing a socialist opposition, under American alliance and economic growth. Faction bosses from Kishi through Tanaka and Takeshita structured its money politics; premiers Nakasone, Koizumi, and Abe shaped eras of reform and nationalism. The party lost power only 1993-94 and 2009-12, returning each time. Its support base of rural districts, business, and construction state networks persists under a personal vote machine of koenkai. The LDP is the most successful democratic party in postwar history by time in power.
