Labour Party (Netherlands)
The Dutch social democratic party, founded in 1946, now fused with GroenLinks as one list.
Overview
The PvdA emerged in 1946 from prewar social democracy and progressive religious currents, the party of Willem Drees welfare state foundations, Joop den Uyl redistribution, and Wim Kok purple coalition market accommodation. Joop den Uyl defined the seventies left; Kok governed 1994-2002 with the VVD. Collapse to nine seats in 2017 under Lodewijk Asscher followed the previous coalition austerity. Under Attje Kuiken and Frans Timmermans the party fused lists with GroenLinks in 2023, polling strongly as the combined left. It remains the historic pole of Dutch social democracy: unions, housing corporations, and the great cities.
