Justicialist Party
The Peronist party of Argentina, founded around Juan Peron in 1947, the dominant force of Argentine politics.
Overview
Justicialismo grew from the 1945 labor mobilization and Peron presidency, formalized as a party in 1947 and banned after his 1955 overthrow, returning with his 1973 comeback. After the dictatorship, the Justicialist PJ dominated the restored democracy through the 1989-99 Menem presidency and the Kirchner era, Nestor then Cristina Fernandez governing 2003-2015. Its tradition, justicialista doctrine, fuses labor rights, nationalism, and charismatic leadership, spanning left and right Peronist factions that dispute its mantle. Cristina Fernandez remains its central figure and Alberto Fernandez its 2019-2023 president. No Argentine election is intelligible without it, the paradigm of the multi class catch all movement party.
