Democratic Party (Italy)
The principal Italian center left party, founded in 2007 from the successor parties of the old Communist and Christian Democratic lefts.
Overview
The Partito Democratico formed in 2007 from the Democrats of the Left, heirs of the Italian Communist Party via the PDS, and La Margherita, the progressive Catholic tradition. Walter Veltroni, Pier Luigi Bersani, Matteo Renzi, Nicola Zingaretti, and Elly Schlein led it through cycles of modernization and identity crisis. Renzi as prime minister 2014-2016 passed labor and constitutional reforms; the 2016 referendum defeat and 2018 loss ended that chapter. The PD anchors center left coalitions, governs regions from Emilia to Tuscany, and holds the presidency of the Republic through Sergio Mattarella, elected with broad cross party support.
