Colorado Party (Paraguay)
The Paraguayan party, founded in 1887, which ruled for seventy years and still anchors the right.
Overview
The ANR Colorado Party was founded in 1887 by supporters of General Bernardino Caballero against liberal rivals, dominating Paraguay until the 1904 liberal revolution, returning to power from 1946 and under General Stroessner from 1954 to 1989, the longest right wing personal dictatorship of the cold war Americas. The party survived democratization by winning elections, from 1989 through 2008, returning 2013-2023 under Horacio Cartes and Mario Abdo Benitez. It combines traditional clientelist machines, military lineage, and business factions, the most successful authoritarian-to-electoral party survival in the hemisphere.
