Broad Front (Uruguay)
The Uruguayan left coalition, founded in 1971, which governed from 2005 to 2020 and again from 2025.
Overview
The Frente Amplio united socialists, communists, Christian Democrats, and former guerrillas in 1971 around General Liber Seregni, surviving dictatorship ban and returning as the pole of the left. Tabare Vazquez won the presidency in 2004, succeeded by Jose Mujica in 2010, the former Tupamaro prisoner who legalized abortion, marriage equality, and cannabis while living on a farm donating his salary. Vazquez returned 2015-2020; Yamandu Orsi won again in 2024. The coalition proves Latin American lefts can govern stably in alliance with strong institutions, riding commodity booms and preserving social peace.
