Brazilian Social Democracy Party
The Brazilian center right party, founded in 1988, of Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
Overview
The PSDB formed in 1988 from dissident PMDB intellectuals around Fernando Henrique Cardoso, social democratic by name and social liberal in government. Cardoso as finance minister killed hyperinflation with the 1994 Real Plan, then won two presidencies with privatization and stabilization 1995-2002. Long the PT chief rival in the 1994-2014 polarization, the party declined as the party system realigned around Bolsonaro versus PT, ending its national coalition role. It governs states such as Sao Paulo in alliances with the right, a case of a party whose founding social democratic label drifted far from its late practice.
