Australian Labor Party
The Australian social democratic party, dating from the 1890s, the oldest labor party in the world.
Overview
Labor formed in the colonies during the 1891 strikes, holding the world first labor governments briefly in Queensland in 1899, and federating with the nation in 1901. Its 1910 Fisher government was the first majority labor government anywhere. The 1916 and 1955 splits over conscription and communism scarred it; Curtin led the war, Chifley built postwar welfare, Whitlam transformed it 1972-75 until the dismissal, Hawke and Keating opened the economy 1983-96, Rudd and Gillard the climate and GFC era, and Albanese won 2022. The party is structurally fused with the union movement, caucus bound by solidarity rules, the elder institution of the democratic left in the English speaking world.
