Aam Aadmi Party

MovementBig Tent

The Indian anti corruption party, founded in 2012, governing Delhi and Punjab.

Overview

The AAP grew from the 2011 Anna Hazare anti corruption fasts, founded by Arvind Kejriwal and comrades in 2012 with the common man as symbol, a broom as logo. Winning Delhi in 2013 and decisively in 2015, it governed on subsidized electricity and water, Mohalla clinics, and school reform, clashing repeatedly with the LG and central government over powers. It expanded to win Punjab in 2022 under Bhagwant Mann. Arrests of its leaders in corruption cases framed as political warfare by critics and as accountability by the centre, AAP positions itself as the alternative to BJP and Congress dynastic politics, a technocratic welfare populism.
