Primaries Around the World

The US turned candidate selection over to voters through successive reforms, Wisconsin 1903 primaries, the 1972 McGovern reforms making both parties democratic, superdelegates as the 1980s correction. Elsewhere selection differs: British and Canadian leaders chosen by members, often with trade union votes in Labour history, European parties by congress delegates or member ballots, Israels Likud by registered membership votes.

Open primaries, letting nonmembers vote, exist in California and Louisiana variants. The trend across democracies is the same, leadership selection has democratized from smoke filled rooms to memberships and primaries, weakening bosses while strengthening personal campaigns and media..
