How Political Parties Originate

Parties are born from splits, crises, and new cleavages. Some formed around revolutions, the American Democratic Republicans against the Federalists, some from suffrage expansion, mass labor parties when workers got the vote, and some from elite factions crystallizing, the British Conservatives from Toryism.

Twentieth century entries arrived with decolonization and democratization, Indias Congress born of independence struggle, post 1989 parties across Eastern Europe. Recent origins are digital: podemos built on movement networks, LREM from an email list.

The pattern holds, parties emerge when a social group needs a durable vehicle for contesting power, not before..
